PlayStation CEO says day-one games on PS Plus is unfeasible

Sony just announced its revamped PlayStation Plus game subscription service, finally providing concrete details on the console manufacturer’s response to Xbox Games Pass. According to PlayStation Head Jim Ryan however, the notion of adding brand new games day-one to PS Plus “would not be possible.”

Sony finally officially announced its revamped PS Plus service, offering three plans – the most expensive of which includes pre-existing benefits while also adding game streaming and downloading for hundreds of games across PSOne, PS2, PS3 (streaming only), PS4, PS5 and PSP systems.

In terms of quantity, this new PS Now service far exceeds Xbox Game Pass’ library. One thing PS Plus won’t have however is day-one first-party simultaneous launches, with PlayStation Head Jim Ryan talking to Gamesindustry.biz, saying:

“[In terms of] putting our own games into this service, or any of our services, upon their release… as you well know, this is not a road that we've gone down in the past. And it's not a road that we're going to go down with this new service.”

Explaining this conscious decision, Ryan claimed that “We feel if we were to do that with the games that we make at PlayStation Studios, that virtuous cycle will be broken. The level of investment that we need to make in our studios would not be possible, and we think the knock-on effect on the quality of the games that we make would not be something that gamers want.”

Microsoft and Sony are clearly looking at the video games industry with different eyes. Sony’s approach is much more traditional, and as mentioned by Ryan, a great deal of effort, time and money is put into ensuring each new PlayStation release feels like a blockbuster and premium event. It therefore makes sense that Sony wouldn’t include day-one releases – even if it is disappointing for some.
