Bethesda is ramping up to showcase Starfield gameplay this summer. In the meantime, the studio has been releasing developer diaries and concept art for the game. In the latest developer diary, we see Todd Howard and other key leads on the game talking about character creation, RPG mechanics and factions within the game.
In the video, Starfield director, Todd Howard, design director, Emil Pagliarulo, lead quest designer, Will Shen and lead artist, Istvan Pely, give us some updates on Starfield. We already knew that Starfield would run on an upgraded engine, dubbed ‘Creation Engine 2', but Bethesda has revealed some of the specific upgrades. This includes the scanning of real-world models to make environments more believable and detailed, as well as upgrades to player and NPC appearance to improve interactions in-game and make them “as impactful as possible”.
In Fallout 4 and Fallout 76, Bethesda took a step away from the deeper RPG mechanics it had displayed in previous titles. With Starfield, Bethesda is looking to bring back the old-school RPG feel, with far more meaningful choices. This will play into the faction system too, where you can pick sides and roleplay as a good or evil character based on the situation. One small example of this is given – players can choose to join the Crimson Fleet, a band of space pirates, or you can report back to the authorities and be a “space cop”, working to take the fleet down.
Bethesda has also talked up the companion system a little bit, so players should expect more interactions with their companions and more dialogue with them throughout the journey.
So far, we've only had one trailer for Starfield and it did not include any gameplay. It is expected that Starfield will be the main focus of Xbox's E3 presentation this year. The game will release on Xbox Series X/S and PC on the 11th of November.
