Netflix acquires Boss Fight Entertainment to bolster gaming efforts

After launching Netflix Games in 2021, the streaming giant has been on the lookout for game development studios to help bolster its game offerings. Recently, Netflix has acquired Night School Studio (Oxenfree), Next Games (Stranger Things, The Walking Dead) and now, Boss Fight Entertainment is being added to that list.

This month, Netflix acquired Boss Fight Entertainment. The studio formed back in 2013, founded by former Zynga and Ensemble Studios staff. The studio has released just two titles since its formation – Dungeon Boss, and myVEGAS Bingo, two iOS and Android games.

Netflix is mostly focused on acquiring studios that can deliver smaller, easy to run, engaging titles, rather than huge blockbuster games with mammoth-sized budgets. With that in mind, all of Netflix's acquisitions so far have made sense, and we don't expect to see the company looking to acquire a major PC or console game studio or publisher.

Following the announcement, Netflix's VP of game studios, Amir Rahimi, said that Netflix hopes to bring “a wide variety of delightful and deeply engaging original games with no ads and no in-app purchases”.

KitGuru Says: Netflix isn’t aiming to rival consoles or create Triple A titles at this point in time. However, it will want engaging, non-graphically demanding indie games. Now we’ll just have to wait and see what the company can deliver in the years ahead.
