Cyberpunk 2077’s expansion isn’t coming until 2023

Last night, CD Projekt Red held its quarterly investors call, unveiling new milestones, changes within the company, and future plans at the studio. Aside from updating us on Cyberpunk 2077 sales, the studio also made some comments about the game's upcoming expansion, which is unfortunately arriving later than expected.

After launch, CD Projekt Red had to scrap its post-launch content plans for Cyberpunk 2077 to work on patches and fixes. This work took the studio over a year, and is now considered complete. With that in mind, the number of people working on the expansion has increased following Patch 1.5 for the base game, but there is still a long road ahead to release.

CD Projekt CFO, Piotr Nielubowicz said: “For everyone who has already walked the streets of Night City – we’re working on further DLCs as well as on a major expansion featuring a new storyline.” Later on, the Cyberpunk 2077 Twitter account clarified the comments during the call, saying that Cyberpunk 2077's upcoming expansion “will arrive in 2023”. The tweet included a slide of the company's 2022 production plans, which includes development work on the expansion sitting right at the top of the list.

Part of the reason for the delay is CD Projekt Red's new approach to game development. After running into controversy over its crunch culture during Cyberpunk 2077's development, new policies have been put in place to avoid overworking teams across the studio. Given that the expansion could arrive close to three years after the base game's launch, we might not get a second expansion after all. Instead, that work may well end up going towards a full new Cyberpunk game.

KitGuru Says: While the expansion might not be releasing this year, it could be targeting a Q1 or Q2 2022 release window. If that is the case, then we may still get a teaser trailer before the end of this year.
