Star Wars Outlaws’ open-world was inspired by Ghost of Tsushima

With Star Wars Outlaws set to release later this month, the team at Ubisoft have been ramping up their marketing and messaging. In discussing the game’s open world, the team revealed that Sucker Punch’s Ghost of Tsushima served as their “biggest reference.”

During a preview event for Star Wars Outlaws, GamesRadar was given the opportunity to speak to the game’s director ‘Julian Gerighty’ who revealed that:

“My biggest reference [for the open world] was Ghost of Tsushima, which is more on the Kurosawa side of inspiration than the Western, the John Ford side of the inspiration for George Lucas.”

Comparing this approach to the likes of Red Dead Redemption, Gerighty continued “Red Dead Redemption is phenomenal, [because it treats] the world as a world – not as a checklist of activities that are repeated often. But I think that Ghost of Tsushima, what I loved about it was this purity of having a player fantasy and really leaning into it. This is the story, the world, the character, everything fits together with the gameplay guiding everything. That's the fantasy of ‘you are a samurai ninja in Japan.' That was one of the guiding lights for this.”

Given how Ghost of Tsushima has in many ways been described as the peak of the Ubisoft-styled open world game, it is an interesting full circle moment for the publisher to now be taking inspiration from Sucker Punch’s title. Hopefully this all bodes well for the upcoming Star Wars Outlaws.
