The British Academy of Film and Television Arts is one of the oldest awards ceremonies in entertainment, this year celebrating their 75th anniversary. The gaming BAFTAs have now concluded – with Returnal sweeping the event.
First founded back in 2004, the latest BAFTA Games Awards just concluded, celebrating its 18th annual ceremony. Eighteen is seemingly the magic number, as there were also 18 categories for which industry developers and publishers were vying for. With that, the winners of the 2022 Gaming BAFTAs were:
- Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart – Animation
- The Artful Escape – Artistic Achievement
- Returnal – Audio Achievement
- Returnal – Best Game
- Forza Horizon 5 – British Game
- Toem – Debut Game
- No Man’s Sky – Evolving Game
- Chicory: A Colorful Tale – Family
- Before Your Eyes – Game Beyond Entertainment
- Inscryption – Game Design
- It Takes Two – Multiplayer
- Returnal – Music
- Unpacking – Narrative
- It Takes Two – Original Property
- Jane Perry (Returnal) – Performer In A Leading Role
- Kimberly Brooks (Psychonauts 2)- Performer In A Supporting Role
- Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart – Technical Achievement
- Unpacking – Ee Game Of The Year
As can be seen, 2021 was a great year for video games, and the variety of winners showcases this. Of course, one game seemingly stood out, as Returnal managed to nab 4 of the 18 awards – double the amount of the second most-awarded.
Award ceremonies are inherently subjective and shouldn’t necessarily be taken seriously, but it is interesting nonetheless to see what the BAFTAs have to say. The full list of nominees can be found HERE.
