Dead Island 2 might be launching sooner than expected

It has been eight years since Dead Island 2 was first announced and several years since the last update on the game’s development, at which point the game underwent another reboot at a new studio. In recent months, we've heard that the game is planned to launch in the current fiscal year, and new reports claim the game's re-announcement and release are closer than we may think.

Originally revealed back in 2014, Dead Island 2 was originally being created by Yager Development, but due to various issues, publisher Deep Silver eventually transferred the project to Sumo Digital. Then, in 2019, development changed hands again, going to Deep Silver’s internal Dambuster Studio. Embracer Group, Deep  Silver's parent company, recently informed investors that the game is planned to release in the current fiscal year, placing the release date anywhere between April 2022 and March 2023.

According to Colin Moriarty on the Sacred Symbols Podcast, Dead Island 2 may be heading towards a Q4 2022 release, with a new unveiling taking place this summer. With that said, it is also worth noting that while Q4 2022 might be an internal goal at the studio, it is entirely possible that the game slips into the first half of 2023, whether for additional development work, or to avoid other major holiday titles to ensure higher sales.

With E3 2022 cancelled, we don't know where Dead Island 2 will show up next, but my money is going to be on Geoff Keighley's upcoming E3 replacement show, Summer Games Fest, which is taking place in June.

KitGuru Says: Dead Island 2 has had a turbulent development cycle, but it looks like there is light at the end of the tunnel. If all goes well, we should have a new look at the game and a release date later this year.
