The video games industry is a fast-moving and ever-evolving space, with new games coming out on a weekly basis. Unfortunately, many older titles have been left behind as a consequence, be it due to changing technologies or simply lack of support. Fortunately, Sony has now created a new team focused on preserving the legacy of games.
Game developer Garrett Fredley recently took to Twitter to announce that “Today is my first day as a Senior Build Engineer at @PlayStation, working as one of their initial hires for the newly created Preservation team!”
Sony themselves have yet to comment on this new team, though according to Fredley “Game Preservation was my first career passion, so I'm ecstatic that I get to go back to those roots.”
Game preservation is a vitally important responsibility, ensuring that the history of the industry and all of its games are available and accessible in some manner. While we do not yet know what Sony’s intention with this new team is, the console manufacturer will be tapping into its legacy titles for the upcoming PS Plus revamp, so that might certainly factor into the reasons for the team’s creation.
Regardless of intentions, it is good to see Sony making an active effort to preserve the history of their games.
