Sonic Frontiers Gameplay Revealed

Sonic Frontiers is an upcoming ‘open-zone’ Sonic the Hedgehog game which looks unlike any other released by SEGA over the course of the Blue Blur’s 30 year history. Ahead of the upcoming onslaught of announcements expected in June, SEGA has shown off the first gameplay for Sonic Frontiers.

Making the announcement on Twitter, the official Sonic the Hedgehog account said “Enjoy this small preview of Sonic Frontiers, and tune in all June long for the @IGN First cover story for more world-exclusive reveals!”

With that, the team at SEGA gave fans their first look at actual gameplay for Sonic Frontiers – and it looks good! Though only 30 seconds in length, there was plenty shown off, including the fact that Sonic’s moveset has been altered slightly. While it seems that he is still able to use the boost mechanic, the open world nature of the game means that players will have a lot more control over Sonic throughout – and this can be seen in the footage shown.

Additionally, Sonic retains his now iconic homing attack – though as with the boost, it looks somewhat different in its implementation. A few other notable details includes the fact that combat has seemingly been expanded, looking not dissimilar to the way enemies were dispatched in 2004’s Sonic Heroes, though with seemingly a more tactical approach.

Last but not least, some of the enemy designs share similar motifs to that of Eggman’s army from the Sonic the Hedgehog film. What this means is unknown, though with “everything from world-exclusive gameplay reveals to the first ever hands-on impressions, to interviews with the game's creators and more,” happening in June, this upcoming month looks to be a big one for Sonic the Hedgehog.
