Early Intel Core i7-12800HX mobile CPU review shows it beating the Core i7-12700H in multi-core tests

Intel announced the 12th Gen Core HX processors just yesterday, but laptops featuring these chips have already gotten into the hands of reviewers. The first HX chip to be tested was the Core i7-12800HX, which according to the review, seems like a Core i7-12700H with better multi-core performance.

The author of the first review is the Golden Pig Upgrade Pack team (via VideoCardz), which also shared a few pictures of the BGA package itself. In these photos, we can see it looks almost the same as the Alder Lake-S LGA package of the desktop CPUs.

The laptops used for the review were two Lenovo Y9000s, one with a Core i7-12800HX and the other with an i7-12700H. Moreover, each laptop packed an RTX 3070 Ti mobile GPU and 16GB of DDR5-4800 memory. This way, the comparison is fair, and the reviewer can isolate the CPU performance.

Single-core performance between the two chips in synthetic workloads was the same (difference of 0.59%). However, the HX chip was clearly the winner in the multi-core tests, beating the i7-12700H by over 15%. The reviewer also tested both systems on creation and production workloads, where the HX was just slightly faster than the other i7 CPU.

Overall, the HX-based system didn't impress in gaming, performing about the same as the 12700H-powered laptop in online games and just 2.5% faster in AAA games.

KitGuru says: Both of these CPUs are similar, with the HX having a slightly higher clock speed and two extra P-Cores. With that in mind, these results seem reasonable and the multi-core gains make sense.
