Prior to the announcement that a remake of 2008’s Dead Space was in development at EA, Striking Distance Studios (consisting of ex-Dead Space devs) announced The Callisto Protocol: a survival horror game set in the world of the battle royale game PUBG. Though only teased back in 2020, we will finally get our first proper look at the game sometime this week.
Making the announcement on Twitter, Glen Schofield, the CEO of Striking Distance Studios and director of The Callisto Protocol said “If you don’t already follow @CallistoTheGame now might be a good time to start. Look for some news [this] week. Until then, here’s a closeup of one of the creatures from our world class character team. They’re incredible.”
While it may be hard to figure out what exactly the photo is showing, it certainly does look grotesque. The Callisto Protocol was first announced at the 2020 Game Awards as a survival horror narrative experience set 300 years after the events of the battle royale game PUBG: Battlegrounds.
What we have seen so far seems to share very little with PUBG, especially with previous comments from Schofield saying “I’m looking forward to really trying to make the scariest game on next-gen platforms”. The game is still a big unknown, but hopefully by this time next week we will better understand what exactly The Callisto Protocol is.
