Despite the continuous growth of the video games industry, very few games (relatively speaking) are able to say they have sold more than a million copies. Even fewer have sold 10 million, but the latest mainline Final Fantasy game – FFXV — has managed just that.
Making the announcement on Twitter, the official Final Fantasy account revealed that “10 million copies of Final Fantasy XV have been sold or shipped to date worldwide!” saying in a short but sweet message to the fans, “You guys… are the best.”
Final Fantasy XV launched in late 2016 after many years of development struggles. At launch, the game was praised for its polish, graphical prowess and scope. Despite this, the game suffered from post-launch developmental issues too, ultimately concluding with the game’s DLC plans being ended early.
Despite the many issues it suffered, Final Fantasy XV was exactly what the franchise needed, especially as the previous mainline game (the Final Fantasy XIII trilogy) received a lukewarm reception at best. Final Fantasy XV may not have been the game that was originally promised, but it was the kick that the franchise needed to help it get back on track, helping to start this new age of Final Fantasy.
With Final Fantasy XVI on the horizon, it is interesting to see just how far the franchise has come from the early development days of Final Fantasy XV (known back then as Versus 13). The success of Final Fantasy VII Remake, FFXIV Online and FF XV has helped to put the long-running franchise back on the map. Hopefully Final Fantasy XVI continues this trajectory.
