AMD announces Smart Access Storage technology at Computex 2022

Following on from recent reports, AMD has confirmed Smart Access Storage technology during Computex 2022. The feature will use the DirectStorage API to help reduce load times and improve performance.

AMD Smart Access Storage (SAS) uses Microsoft's DirectStorage API to reduce game loading time when gaming on AMD compatible hardware. That's achieved by accelerating texture streaming by bypassing the CPU while loading the game to avoid bottlenecks. This way, assets are loaded directly into the GPU, which will then handle the decompression.

At the moment, it's unclear if SAS is just AMD's version of the DirectStorage API or an exclusive technology with additional features for AMD hardware users.

AMD promised to share more about SAS soon, so expect new information in the coming months. AMD has multiple major launches scheduled for the second half of the year, including new Ryzen 7000 processors and the AM5 platform, as well as the first RDNA 3 GPUs.
