As a franchise, Pokémon has received much criticism due to the relative lack of evolution of the gameplay over the past quarter century or so. That being said, Pokémon’s core design is a compelling one which other devs have struggled to emulate. Bringing a Pokémon-like experience to all platforms, Temtem will be leaving Early Access this September.
Temtem is a “massively multiplayer creature-collection adventure” in which you can “catch every Temtem, battle other tamers, customize your house, join a friend's adventure or explore the dynamic online world.”
Temtem launched in Early Access back in January 2020 for PC, though the game was promised to come to consoles after its full release. More than 2 years later, Temtem’s 1.0 update is near, with the full game coming to Steam, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch on the 6th of September 2022.
The 1.0 update will bring with it “all-new features and content—including Seasons, the final island of the Archipelago, and rewarding new activities to discover!” Additionally, the team confirmed that “After the launch of 1.0, we’ll release seasonal updates and a Battle Pass with free and premium awards tracks.”
Though it may not have the 25+ year history and billions of pounds behind it, Temtem does look to be the next best thing to a Pokémon game on a non-Nintendo system. With the dev’s future plans for Temtem, it could even surpass it. We will have to wait and see.
