Battlefield 2042 has had a rough time following its rocky launch back in November of 2021. Since then, things have only gotten worse, with the game unable to maintain a stable content release schedule, and as such could not maintain an active audience. This might finally change with the game’s first season, which is launching this June and has now been detailed.
Making the announcement on their website, the team at DICE said “As we’ve been working to get Season 1 into your hands, it’s been a while since we provided you with a better overview of where we are with that work, and the changes and improvements that you can expect to see coming to the game throughout the year.”
With that, they detailed the many changes coming with the game’s first season. The team at DICE have been working on four separate yet essential elements which have been lackluster in BF2042 so far, namely maps; experiences & modes; core gameplay and new content.
Regarding maps, Battlefield 2042 will not only be getting new maps with Season 1, but will see launch maps get their play space reworked to include more cover, new flag positions, and an overall streamlining.
Describing it as an ‘unshackling’, BF2042 is seeing a change to a number of its game modes. The 128 player conquest mode is being altered slightly to feature “less Sectors and Capture points as we introduce new content, and update some of our existing content.”
Breakthrough mode is being entirely reduced to 64 players. While some believe the reasoning behind this is due to a lack of players filling these lobbies, DICE claims that it is to “help us to build more focused frontlines for the engagement, and the reduction in player count ensures that squads which look to work more tactically find more opportunities, and less chaotic resistance in the flanks.”
Additionally, more 32-player game modes like Rush are on their way, with BF2042’s flagship game mode, Hazard Zone, seeing its support ending entirely – aside from essential bug fixes.
On the core gameplay front, Specialists are being revised with new visual changes, additional voice lines and more immersive interactions overall. Furthermore, 3rd person animations are being improved, making this “Next Generation” Battlefield actually starting to feel that way.
EA and DICE are bringing way more changes with the Season 1 update including “New Specialists, new maps, and new weapons and gadgets that help to expand the sandbox” alongside a Battle Pass. While we have to wait until Season 1 actually goes live to judge the update, it feels as though 7 months after the game’s release, Battlefield 2042 is only just about ready for primetime – begging the question why it wasn't delayed until Holiday 2023.
