Bethesda confirms Fallout 5 as next major game after The Elder Scrolls VI

Back in 2021, Bethesda lead, Todd Howard, made some comments about Fallout 5, indicating that the studio has some initial ideas for a new game. Now, Bethesda has confirmed that it is planning to make Fallout 5, but only after wrapping up on The Elder Scrolls VI.

Speaking with IGN this week, Todd Howard confirmed that The Elder Scrolls 6 is in pre-production and that the team would be doing Fallout 5 after that: “Yes, Elder Scrolls 6 is in pre-production and, you know, we’re going to be doing Fallout 5 after that, so our slate’s pretty full going forward for a while”.

After Todd Howard spoke about Fallout 5 in 2021, I came to the conclusion that we likely weren't going to see Fallout 5 until the very end of this decade at the earliest. Starfield is still in development and entered pre-production back in 2015. Assuming The Elder Scrolls VI has a 5-year development cycle, we should see it in 2027-2028, pushing Fallout 5 to some time in the 2030s.

The lengthy wait ahead for Fallout 5 appears to be something that Microsoft and Bethesda are aware of. Recently, there have been rumours that one of Microsoft's other capable RPG studios could produce a new Fallout spin-off game to bridge the gap, similarly to Fallout New Vegas, which Obsidian worked on. Microsoft also has InXile under its wing now, and that studio was created by former Fallout 1 & 2 veterans.

KitGuru Says: The Fallout franchise could be on ice for a while, barring any spin-offs or potential remasters. All we can do is hope that it will be worth the wait in the end.
