Last night during Apple's WWDC keynote, the company officially launched its next generation Apple Silicon processor. The new M2 chip is heading to Macs this year, promising 18% faster CPU performance and 35% faster GPU performance.
The Apple M2 processor is built using the 5nm process and features 20 billion transistors, a 25% increase over the original M1. Overall, Apple says we should see an 18 percent increase in CPU performance, and up to 35 percent more performance from the GPU. This GPU increase has already been demonstrated well, with Resident Evil Village heading to Macs with M1 or M2 processors.
To help aid in these performance increases, Apple is using new performance and efficiency cores in the M2, as well as 24GB of unified memory with 100Gbps memory bandwidth. This is a 50% increase over the bandwidth of the M1 processor.
The eight-core Apple M2 processor will be making its debut in a new MacBook Air soon. The latest ultra-thin Mac now comes with MagSafe charging, a 13.6-inch display and an upgraded battery promising up to 18 hours of use. Pre-orders for the M2 MacBook Air are already live, with prices starting at £1249.
