While there was some buzz around the idea that Obsidian would show Avowed gameplay during the Xbox showcase last night, Obsidian focused its announcements on two smaller projects instead – Grounded and Pentiment. In fact, according to new reports, it could be quite some time before Avowed is ready to be shown, as the project reportedly went through a major leadership change.
According to industry reporter, Jason Schreier, Avowed went through “a major leadership change” in 2021 and has been rebooted “multiple times” since its inception. The last reboot to the game apparently took place in 2020, which is worth noting, as that predates the most recent leaks.
Last year, Windows Central's Jez Corden saw new gameplay footage for Avowed from a build created in 2021, after the reboot Schreier mentioned. However, while Corden is more hopeful that the game could come out next year, Schreier's information on the game's development so far indicates that it is more likely to arrive in 2024.
While Avowed could be another couple of years away, Obsidian does have other games in the works right now. In September this year, the company will officially release Grounded with its full story campaign, and in November, Pillars of Eternity director, Josh Sawyer, will have a new RPG coming out, known as ‘Pentiment'.

KitGuru Says: Avowed isn't necessarily in any kind of development hell or real trouble as a project, but the company has had to replace key developers and make changes along the way. I'm sure Obsidian will reveal more once the game is ready.
