Nordisk Games acquires Until Dawn studio Supermassive Games

The 2020s seems to be the decade of acquisitions – at least so far – with publishers, holding companies and console manufacturers alike all partaking in this most recent acquisition spree. Joining the fray is Nordisk Games, an equity investor who after purchasing a minority stake in Supermassive Games has now announced that they are fully acquiring the studio.

Making the announcement via press release, Supermassive Games revealed that “Copenhagen-based Nordisk Games has fully acquired Supermassive Games, the BAFTA-winning, independent UK game developer best known for the critically acclaimed narrative games Until Dawn, The Dark Pictures Anthology and the recently released The Quarry. The acquisition follows Nordisk Games taking a 30.7% stake in the studio in March 2021.”

Pete Samuels, the CEO of Supermassive Games discussed this recent move, saying “Having had such a positive experience over the past year [with Nordisk Games] it wasn’t a difficult decision when Nordisk Games wanted to explore increasing their investment. We have an exciting and ambitious growth strategy for Supermassive Games and Nordisk Games ownership only enhances that. I’m hugely excited about where the security offered by this partnership, and continued access to the expertise within Nordisk Games, will take us next.”

For every studio that gets acquired, another indie developer is founded, and so while it is unlikely that the industry will find itself in a point of total consolidation, the constant and consistent string of acquisitions across the industry does give some pause. Hopefully Nordisk Games affords Supermassive as much time and creative freedom as they need. The full press release can be found HERE.
