Sonic the Hedgehog 2 surpasses $400 million at Box Office

The Sonic the Hedgehog cinematic universe has made lemonade out of lemons; taking a universally panned trailer and turning it into a box office hit – spawning a sequel just a few short years later to even greater success. After two and a half months in cinemas, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has made over $400 million.

75 days after its launch on the 8th of April 2022, the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 movie has managed to make more than $400 million at the box office (exactly $400,015,446 as of writing). The first Sonic movie made $319,715,683 during its run in cinemas. Of course, it is worth noting that the first film suffered slightly due to the onset of the COVID-19 global pandemic.

Even so, $300+ million for a film which was originally met with mockery upon its initial trailer is impressive indeed – and Sonic 2’s current gross has blown past it with ease. As reported by Deadline, the film is still set to release in Japan and Hong Kong – two rather significant markets.

Even not accounting for these territories however, Sonic 2 is still set to overtake the Uncharted film ($401,622,829), becoming the 4th highest grossing video game film adaptation of all time, only behind Rampage ($428 million), Detective Pikachu ($433 million) and Warcraft ($439 million).

SEGA seems to have big plans for Sonic, with a third film confirmed, as well as a spin-off show starring Idris Elba as Knuckles. We will have to wait and see whether these grand plans pay off.
