Square Enix considering using UE5 for FF7 Remake Part 3

The remake of the PS1 JRPG Final Fantasy VII might just be Square Enix’s most ambitious project so far, with the 1997 classic being reborn in the form of a reimagined trilogy. While the first two entries utilised Epic’s Unreal Engine 4 as its core, the concluding part of the trilogy might upgrade to the latest and greatest UE5.

In an interview conducted by the Japanese publication ‘cgworld’ and translated by Twitter user Genki_JPN, the director for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth – Naoki Hamaguchi  – revealed that the team “are considering using Unreal Engine 5 for the final game,” but they believe that what fans want the most is “for them to deliver the game in good shape as soon as possible.”

That said, the final choice will seemingly ultimately come down to “whether it will be faster to switch engines or whether it is best to make it all at once as it is now.”

Seeing as how the prior FF7 Remake games used Unreal Engine 4, the upgrade to UE5 would be much simpler than switching to an entirely different engine – and could fix the visual issues seen with Rebirth. That said, we will simply have to wait and see what the team winds up deciding on.
