Leaving Early Access back in 2021, Chernobylite was an interesting and relatively unique first-person survival-thriller shooter. The game continued to receive further updates post-launch, bringing additional content alongside ray-tracing to make the abandoned buildings of the exclusion zone even more realistically creepy. In the wake of its success, a very different sequel has now been officially announced.
In a surprising announcement, the team at Farm 51 officially revealed Chernobylite 2: Exclusion Zone – a post-apocalyptic action RPG souls-like adventure in which you’ll “Craft your story by facing sinister hazards and monsters. Survive furious encounters with the help of your crafted weaponry, developed skills, gathered teammates, and supported factions.”
While the first Chernobylite did feature many open areas, it functioned more as open zones which could evolve over time. As such, the shift to a fully open world is an interesting one.
That said, by far the biggest – and likely most controversial – alteration to the formula for the sequel is that Chernobylite 2 is now a 3rd-person shooter, instead of the first-person perspective from the first game.
Given how much the first-person mode added to the immersion and atmosphere of Chernobylite 1, the choice to pivot completely in this way is a curious one. We will have to wait and see how this pans out when the game arrives some time next year. You can read our review of the first game HERE.
