The Elder Scrolls online hits new player milestone

While fans have been waiting for a new single player Elder Scrolls game since 2011, the series’ MMO entry – The Elder Scrolls Online – has been trucking along for the past decade, seeing consistent support and updates from the team at Zenimax Online Studios. A little over half a year from the last milestone announcement, ESO has now officially surpassed 25 million players.

Initially updated back in August (though only just recently discovered), the official Elder Scrolls Online website revealed that the MMO hit a major milestone, writing “Join over 25 million players and discover an adventure unlike anything else in The Elder Scrolls Online, the award-winning online RPG set in the Elder Scrolls universe.”

This marks the first confirmation of this new sales milestone, with the previous figure listed being 24 million back in January of this year.

Elder Scrolls Milestone

For context, ESO hit 10 million players back in November 2017; three and a half years after it had launched. The figures have steadily increased since then, with ESO seeing between 1-2 million additional players each year. The full list of milestones can be seen below:

  • November 2017: 10M
  • June 2018: 11M
  • June 2019: 13.5M
  • January 2020: 15M
  • March 2021: 18M
  • October 2021: 19M
  • January 2022: 20M
  • July 2022: 21M
  • April 2023: 22M
  • January 2024: 24M

Unlike most MMOs, ESO doesn’t require a monthly subscription to access, although the game does release paid expansions. Still, it is tough to compare ESO to other MMOs which require a subscription on top of paid expansions. Regardless, with 25 million players it is safe to assume The Elder Scrolls Online is doing just fine.
