Rockstar is quitting on Red Dead Online

Rockstar has never supported Red Dead Online particularly well and it is clear that the main focus has always been GTA Online. Now, the studio has essentially confirmed exactly that, putting a pause on any major Red Dead Online updates.

This week, Rockstar confirmed that for the past few years, it has been “steadily moving more development resources” towards Grand Theft Auto 6. The studio added it is “making some changes to how we support Red Dead Online” as work on GTA 6 continues to ramp up.

These changes to support ultimately boil down to fewer content updates. There won't be a major Red Dead Online update this year, although GTA Online is due to get new content at its usual pace. In place of major updates, Red Dead Online will continue to have small in-game events.

In many ways, it feels like Red Dead Online was doomed from the start. The game didn't end up hitting the same numbers as GTA Online and it doesn't make as much money, but I can't help but think that a better post-launch content plan would have helped improve things.

KitGuru Says: It seems unlikely that Red Dead Online gets any sort of significant expansion. The next two years are all going to be about getting Grand Theft Auto 6 ready and after that, the GTA Online grind will start over again.
