WD launches world’s first PlayStation-licensed M.2 SSD for PS5

After finally enabling third-party PCIe 4.0 SSDs for PS5, Sony has now found a partner for the first PlayStation-licensed M.2 SSD for the console. The excellent WD_Black SN850 NVMe SSD is now making its way over to the PS5. 

The new WD_Black SN850 NVMe SSD for PS5 Consoles fits within Sony's specifications, enabling next-gen titles to be installed to the drive without sacrificing any performance. The PS5 edition SSD also comes with a validated heatsink design, so it will slot right into the PS5's M.2 slot without any issue.

Speaking on the new PS5 SSD, WD's VP of Consumer Solutions, Susan Park, said: “Western Digital’s WD_BLACK brand was created to bring high performance products to gamers everywhere. Combined with this innovative partnership, we aim to deepen our current commitment to developing storage solutions that enhance the gaming experience for all gamers.”

The WD_Black SN850 NVMe SSD for PS5 doesn't sacrifice anything on the performance front, with read speeds reaching up to 7000MB/s. The 1TB version will cost £179.99, while the 2TB version will be available for £289.99. The SSD is now available directly through Western Digital, but will be made available through other retailers starting in August 2022.
