Sony announces new PlayStation Stars loyalty program

For years, Microsoft has offered a loyalty program to its users, allowing Xbox players to earn points which can later be redeemed for a number of things, from games to gift cards to sweepstakes and even charity donations. Sony now seems to be following suit, offering their own loyalty program called PlayStation Stars.

Making the announcement on the PlayStation Blog, Grace Chen, the Vice President for Network Advertising, Loyalty & Licensed Merchandise said: “Today, I’m pleased to reveal PlayStation Stars, a brand new loyalty program that celebrates you, the player, for being on this ever growing gaming journey with us.”

Launching later this year, the free to join program will allow PlayStation players to “earn rewards by completing a variety of campaigns and activities”. These activities will range from simply playing any game during each month, to being “the first player to platinum a blockbuster title in your local time zone”. PS Plus members will also be able to earn points just by purchasing games on the PlayStation Store.

These points will then be able to be redeemed for a number of prizes “that may include PSN wallet funds and select PlayStation Store products”. Additionally, as part of this program you will be able to earn ‘digital collectibles’ which are described as “digital representations of things that PlayStation fans enjoy, including figurines of beloved and iconic characters from games and other forms of entertainment, as well as cherished devices that tap into Sony’s history of innovation.”

PlayStation Stars is planned for launch later this year, and as with many of Sony’s services, will go live in a staggered regional rollout. The full blog post can be found HERE.
