There won’t be a new Deus Ex game anytime soon

With Eidos Montreal and Crystal Dynamics now being acquired by Embracer Group, there has been a lot of hope for new Deus Ex and Tomb Raider games. We know that Crystal Dynamics is working on the next Tomb Raider already, but the return of Deus Ex could still be years away.

Eidos Montreal put Deus Ex ‘on pause’ after the release of Mankind Divided. Shortly after, Square Enix put the studio on to one of its planned Marvel games, resulting in 2021’s Guardians of the Galaxy. Eidos won’t be returning to Deus Ex straight away though,  as according to industry reporter, Jason Schreier, the studio will be launching a new IP next.

In response to news that Eidos ‘wants to get back to Deus Ex’, Schreier jumped into a Resetera thread to set expectations, saying that “the game furthest in development at Eidos Montreal right now is a new IP”. With that in mind, a new Deus Ex is going to be a long ways off.

With the franchise taking such a long break, it is likely we’ll see a remaster of some form at some point, as that is a big part of Embracer’s business. Embracer Group is in the process of acquiring Crystal Dynamics, Eidos Montreal, the Tomb Raider & Deus Ex IPs and more in a $300M deal with Square Enix. The deal is expected to close later this year.

KitGuru Says: Unfortunately, it sounds like Deus Ex truly has been on pause for years and there is no new game in development just yet. That could change, but development cycles are long. At this rate, there could be more than a ten year gap between Deus Ex games.
