Dune: Awakening is a survival MMO for current-gen consoles and PC

A few years ago, Funcom obtained the rights to make three games based on Dune. We've already seen the release of Dune: Spice Wars and now, at Gamescom, Funcom has unveiled its next game – Dune: Awakening, a new survival MMO set in the Dune universe.

The new trailer comes alongside the first details about the upcoming title. As the trailer shows, this game will be an open-world survival MMO set on the famous desert planet of Arrakis. Combining the “grittiness and creativity of survival games with the social interactivity of large-scale, persistent multiplayer games”. Overall, this is a very different direction to Dune: Spice Wars, which was a strategy game.

In Dune: Awakening, players must build shelters to protect themselves from the sandstorms, preserve their stillsuits, and carefully walk across the desert to avoid encountering sandworms. For that, you'll need to explore the world of Arrakis, scavenging materials from biological testing stations, crashed spaceships and abandoned sietches. But don't forget, Coriolis storms can easily change the landscape, so areas that once seemed safe to travel to may get locked off, forcing you to move elsewhere.

You'll also be able to upgrade your character by consuming spice and build your faction by harvesting, trading, fighting and deceiving others. Look for spice blooms, harvest them and protect your operation from raiders and other players. Whether on foot or in a vehicle (ground or air), battle anyone that tries to put your faction down.

Dune: Awakening's release date hasn't been shared, but we know the game will be available for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and PC. You can already sign up to participate in the beta at the game's official website.
