EA CEO responds to buyout and merger rumours

EA has made a number of big acquisitions in recent years, adding Respawn Entertainment, Codemasters and most recently, Playdemic. Still, that didn't stop EA's name from being mentioned in buyout rumours earlier this year. This week during EA's quarterly earnings call, CEO, Andrew Wilson, addressed the elephant in the room.

Back in May, it was reported that EA has been actively pursuing a buyout, but not necessarily to merge with another gaming publisher. It was claimed that EA was looking to the likes of Comcast, Disney, Universal, Amazon and possibly even Apple. However, it was also claimed that EA wanted to retain its autonomy and keep Andrew Wilson on as CEO post-merger.

This week during EA's earnings call (via IGN), CEO, Andrew Wilson, touched on this subject, saying that while he doesn't want to respond to “rumours and speculation”, he does believe that EA is in the strongest position possible as a standalone company and added that they are on track to be the biggest independent publisher in the world. Wilson ended by saying:

“Our objective is always to take care of our people, our players, and our shareholders. Should there ever be a way for us to do that differently than the way we're doing it today, I of course have to be open to that, but I would tell you today we feel very very confident and excited for our future.”

As it stands, EA did have a good quarter, with revenue being up year-on-year and ‘live service' titles accounting for the majority of the company's earnings. Due to this, the company hasn't really been impacted by the lacklustre performance of Battlefield 2042. Looking ahead, EA will have more Sports titles to close out this year, and next year will see the launch of multiple major single-player projects, including Dead Space Remake and Star Wars Jedi Survivor.

KitGuru Says: EA is having a quiet year outside of sports, in part due to the lack of interest in the latest Battlefield. However, earnings haven't taken a hit and there are promising single-player projects coming in early 2023 and beyond. With that in mind, it seems unlikely that EA will sell anytime soon.
