As we reached the final years of the 8th generation of video game consoles, the file sizes for titles began to balloon somewhat out of control. One of the biggest culprits was Call of Duty – with some of the games surpassing 200GB. While measures have been taken in the past to ease the burden of such a large file size, it seems the latest plan will take this one step further.
In a blog post titled ‘Optimizing the Call of Duty Experience: A Roadmap to Black Ops 6 Launch’ the team revealed how they plan to make the overall player experience much better with the launch of BO6.
According to the team, “We’ve heard your feedback, and along with our own testing and learnings, have worked to optimize the way players access and download Call of Duty. This begins by revamping the experience formerly known as Call of Duty HQ.”
The alterations to COD HQ is quite far-reaching, with players set to soon be presented with:
- A new streamlined interface
- Direct access to games
- More control over your downloads, including Call of Duty: Warzone content
- Expanded streaming technology to reduce file sizes
Of course, by far the most impactful change is towards Warzone, with it being decoupled from the base Call of Duty app – potentially cutting the game’s file size drastically.
According to Activision “These changes will be rolled out in phases as a series of downloads. After these larger initial updates, future Call of Duty downloads will decrease in size and existing files will take up less space on your device.”
As mentioned, certain steps have been taken in the past to try and cut down file sizes, including letting you choose not to install the campaign/multiplayer. Hopefully this revamp improves things further.
