Gears of War studio is helping develop State of Decay 3

State of Decay 3 was announced all the way back in 2020 with a teaser trailer and little else. While we still have yet to get a proper look at the upcoming open-world zombie survival game, Matt Booty, the Head of Xbox Game Studios, has now offered some insights into the game’s development, including the fact that Gears of War studio ‘The Coalition’ are assisting primary developer ‘Undead Labs’ with the project.

Making an appearance on Xbox’s Major Nelson podcast the Head of Xbox Game Studios, Matt Booty, discussed the current status of Undead Labs’ ‘State of Decay 3, saying (as transcribed by wccftech):

“You mentioned Undead Labs, they're working with The Coalition up in Vancouver, our Gears of War studio, using some of the technology around Unreal Engine 5 and some of the stuff that's been in Gears of War before to bring that into State of Decay 3.”

Though little else of substance was revealed, Booty did briefly touch on the relationship between 2018’s State of Decay 2 and the upcoming sequel, saying “All of that, the things [Undead Labs] are doing [in State of Decay 2], are really the testbed, the proving grounds, for all the stuff that's going in State of Decay 3.”

Though not unsurprising, the confirmation that State of Decay 3 will not deviate too far from the previous game will be a relief to some fans of the previous titles, as the fundamentals underneath State of Decay 2 were always solid – only hampered at the time by a relatively modest budget.

With Undead Labs now upgrading to Unreal Engine 5 while also seeing assistance from UE experts ‘The Coalition’, hopefully the potential of the State of Decay franchise is fully realised. We will have to wait and see.
