SEGA may reveal Yakuza 8 in upcoming livestream

The Yakuza series has been going from strength to strength, with the latest entry taking the long-running franchise in a whole new direction – to great success. Two and a half years following the release of Yakuza: Like a Dragon, the team at RGG Studio look set to show off Yakuza 8 in just a few short days.

As reported by Gematsu, publisher SEGA announced that they will be hosting a ‘short episode’ of ‘Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio TV’ on the 8th of September at 8PM JST (12PM UK time). While little is known about what we can expect to see, the title for the episode is dubbed as “Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio TV #12.5: Sneak Peek Trailer Brought to You by the Director!” and will feature Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio director and executive producer Masayoshi Yokoyama as well as product manager Masaya Santou

RGG Studio have been known primarily for developing two franchises in recent years: Yakuza, and Judgment. That being said, the team have previously revealed that they are working on a new IP, as well as Yakuza 8 and a potential 3rd entry in the Judgment series.

Of the three titles, Yakuza 8 seems to be the furthest in development, with the team already giving us some plot details, including the fact that it will continue the story of Like a Dragon with Ichiban Kasuga as the protagonist, and “the story will be set in the present day for the year the game goes on sale”. Furthermore, the stream taking place on the 8th of September at 8pm (JST) does not seem like a mere coincidence.

Regardless of what the announcement ends up being, we won’t have to wait too long to find out. With it having been 2 and a half years since Like a Dragon, it is exciting to be mere days away from getting a look at the sequel – assuming that is what ends up being announced. We will have to wait and see.
