Legal documents confirm PS4 outsold Xbox One 2:1

Microsoft is currently in the process of having its massive acquisition of Activision Blizzard approved by governments across the world. While most countries don't publicly publish documents involved in these investigations, things work a bit differently in Brazil, which has given us an excellent look behind the curtain. The latest documents reveal just how much the PS4 outsold the Xbox One last generation.

In its official opinion on the acquisition, Sony shared several concerns, noting that Call of Duty is a powerful IP for a console platform to own, and adding that Microsoft's games subscription business is rapidly dominating the market. Microsoft responded to this by pointing out that Sony itself has paid to keep games off of Xbox Game Pass in the past.

In addition to this, another document shows Microsoft arguing its position in the wider gaming market. As reported by GameLuster, one of the documents includes Microsoft's console sales estimates, showing that the PlayStation 4 ultimately outsold the Xbox One 2:1 over the last generation.

The documentation also confirms something we've known for a long time – the future of Xbox is Game Pass. Microsoft has moved on from focusing on device sales and is now looking to compete in the market through services, like Game Pass. Meanwhile, Sony is still very focused on hardware sales. The implication here seems to be that both companies are competing in different ways, and so Microsoft doesn't believe Game Pass growth will hurt PlayStation sales.

KitGuru Says: Microsoft is likely making similar arguments in other legal filings as the company continues to seek approval for the Activision Blizzard acquisition.
