New job listing teases Housemarque’s “next big game”

Finnish studio Housemarque saw its latest and greatest success with the release of the roguelite third-person bullet-hell Returnal back in 2021. A new job listing by the studio has offered some interesting details on the team’s “next big game.”

Following the success of Returnal, Sony-owned studio Housemarque has already teased that they are working on their next title and that it will be even bigger than the PS5-exclusive Returnal.

The job listing for a Senior Animation Programmer by the studio (as discovered by tech4gamers) has seemingly revealed that their next game (which we know will be a new IP) will utilise Epic Games’ Unreal Engine as its core technology, thanks to one of the job’s ‘valued experiences’ specifically listing Unreal Engine.

Returnal was developed using UE4 and so the studio’s continued use in it is not surprising. What will be interesting to see is if the team sticks with UE4 or whether they will shift to the latest and greatest Unreal Engine 5.

Another (albeit minor) tidbit of information confirms that the game will utilise 3D characters. Though not terribly unsurprising, we have seen other studios shift between all manner of core game designs and styles (such as with Obsidian Entertainment’s upcoming ‘Pentiment’). It seems that Housemarque will be sticking to what they know best.
