Despite efforts to rework the game, Battlefield 2042 hasn't managed to win back its player base yet. Still, DICE is continuing to improve things. For Season 2, players will still have to use the game's specialists system, which has been a major point of contention amongst Battlefield fans. However, from Season 3 onwards, Battlefield will go back to having a class system.
Previous Battlefield titles had playable classes, allowing players to hone in on their role in-game. These classes were replaced by ‘specialist' characters, which long-time fans of the series did not appreciate. After gathering feedback, DICE has now decided to bring back the traditional class system, although Specialists won't be going away completely.
Speaking on the change, Battlefield 2042 producer, Alexia Christofi said (via VGC): “The arrival of Specialists in Battlefield 2042 has been polarising. We have heard you. So, in Season 3 we’ll be moving Specialists into the classic and familiar Battlefield class system. They’ll have traits available to all Specialists within a given class, with existing open gadgets and throwables split between classes to fit their role.”
This is a “significant change” for DICE, which is why this change is coming for Season 3, and not earlier. Season 2 of Battlefield 2042 is due to run from September through October, so we could see the new class system in place before the end of the year.
