The recently released Saints Row reboot has been mired with quite a bit of controversy for all manner of reasons. Despite this, it seems the excitement surrounding the game was enough to push the title to having an excellent first week on the market, topping the UK sales charts and outselling the team’s previous game 5 times over.
Gamesindustry.biz’s Christopher Dring took to Twitter to reveal that Saints Row has topped the UK’s game sales charts during its launch week. It is worth noting that the charts only account for physical copies sold. While this means that it is somewhat difficult to compare to previous Saints Row games due to the rise in adoption of digital gaming in the years since the last game’s entry,
Dring did reveal that the latest Saints Row title sold 5X as many copies during its launch week when compared to Volition’s previous title ‘Agents of Mayhem’. Of course, Agents of Mayhem was a mostly new IP, while the Saints Row reboot is lifted by the popularity of its past games, but even so, the contrast is stark and impressive.
The discourse surrounding the Saints Row reboot has been unfortunate for long-term fans of the franchise. That being said, the game’s early commercial success should hopefully afford the team at Volition the resources needed to right the game’s wrongs. We will have to wait and see.
