Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands is officially its own franchise

Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands released earlier this year to a warm reception from fans. Taking the Borderlands formula and giving it a fantasy twist seems to have worked out for developer Gearbox Software, as according to the studio, Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands is now its own franchise.

Speaking during Embracer Group’s annual general meeting (as transcribed by IGN), Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford discussed the success of Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands, saying “Wonderlands shattered all of our target expectations, both critically and commercially, and I'm thrilled to report that in addition to great financial rewards from this victory that will be coming our way in the coming quarters, we have established a firm beachhead, and we now clearly have a new franchise on our hands.”

Additionally, Pitchford confirmed that “future experiences [are] already under development”. As mentioned, Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands took players into a meta DnD-like world filled with magic and mysticism; and this seems to have paid off. While no sales data has been shared, we do know that the game exceeded the publisher’s expectations, and so it makes sense as to why Gearbox is taking this spin-off title and elevating it into its own franchise.

While Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands was enjoyed by most, one of the biggest complaints levied towards the game was that it shared many similarities with the original Borderlands franchise, and so in some ways felt like a palette swap. With Wonderlands becoming its own franchise however, hopefully the next game can separate itself further from Borderlands – truly making it feel like its own unique experience.
