2022 has been a good year for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, with a brand new game having been released in the form of TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge as well as a re-release of the turtles’ classic arcade adventures as part of the ‘Cowabunga Collection’. Following these two successes, it has been revealed that a AAA TMNT game is on the way.
As reported by Nickelodeon-focused website NickALive, the latest issue of the Toy World Magazine revealed that there are plans to release a AAA TMNT game some time next year.
While little else is known currently, the concept of a AAA TMNT title is tantalising, especially as aside from Shredder’s Revenge and the Cowabunga Collection, we have seen little from the Turtles when it comes to video games – especially in recent years.
Prior to these aforementioned titles, the most recent TMNT console game was released all the way back in 2016 (TMNT: Mutants in Manhattan) and was developed by PlatinumGames and published by Activision – though unfortunately to very little fanfare.
The power of modern video game systems could allow for a transformative TMNT title to be made as long as the game is given the time and budget necessary. It will be interesting to see what approach the team takes with this upcoming title, including the tone, art style and gameplay experience. Hopefully we don’t have to wait too long to find out.
