One of the most surprising announcements at Nintendo’s recently held Direct was the reveal that the long-elusive GoldenEye 007 would be leaving its Nintendo 64 shackles and would be coming to the Switch. Even more surprising however is the fact that the game is set to also come to Microsodt’s Xbox consoles – though with some upsides and downsides.
Making the announcement on the Xbox Blog, Craig Duncan, the Studio Head at Rare said “Since its original release in 1997, GoldenEye 007 has remained a beloved classic in the hearts and minds of millions of fans worldwide. Today, we’re excited to announce that a new generation of players will soon get to experience the genre-defining stealth shooter gameplay for themselves, faithfully recreated to preserve the action and excitement of the original while adding new features for the modern age of gaming.”
The game will retain all of the original title’s features, including the campaign, local split-screen multiplayer, and even all of the cheats available within the original N64 game. That being said, it will also be ‘Enhanced’ with some modern conveniences such as dual analogue stick support; native 16:9 resolution up to 4K Ultra HD; a stable frame rate and game achievements.
Though it does come with many enhancements, it is unfortunate to see the game not seeing online multiplayer support as is possible with the Switch re-release of GoldenEye 007.
There is no release date for GoldenEye, but when it does, it will be available across the Xbox One family as well as the Series X|S devices – both through Game Pass and as a free update to Rare Replay owners.
