The release of Resident Evil VII: Biohazard back in 2017 revitalised the Resident Evil franchise in many ways, including but not limited to the introduction of a brand-new protagonist in the form of Ethan Winters. With the Shadows of Rose DLC launching next month, Capcom has announced that the Winters saga is coming to an end.
In an interview conducted by IGN, Resident Evil Village’s DLC director Kento Kinoshita confirmed that the studio is “creating the Shadows of Rose story to conclude the Winters family saga” meaning that whatever game comes next will feature a different protagonist, and perhaps a different sub-story entirely.
The Resident Evil franchise has birthed many iconic characters and so it would not be surprising to see future titles return to the likes of Jill Valentine, Leon Kennedy and company. As we saw with RE7 however, Capcom found great success in moving away from these tried-and-true characters, and so it is possible that we might once again see a brand-new protagonist thrown into a wholly new environment.
With the Resident Evil village Shadow of Rose DLC set to release on the 28th of October, it will be interesting to see whether the game’s conclusion hints towards what we might expect in the future. Time will tell.
