EA reportedly cancelling Project CARS and DIRT franchises

Codemasters has long been one of the premiere developers of racing video games, ranging from arcade-like experiences to complete hardcore racing sims. In the wake of Codemasters being bought out by EA, it has now been revealed that the Project CARS and DIRT franchises are being discontinued.

As reported by Gamesindustry.biz (and corroborated by Insider Gaming), EA is said to be dropping both the Project CARS and DIRT franchises, with an internal email claiming that all employees working on Project CARS will be moved into “suitable roles” elsewhere.

The Project Cars franchise was acquired by Codemasters back in 2019, with EA then later acquiring Codemasters early last year; obtaining the studio’s IP alongside it.

Codemasters has long been responsible for a wide number of different racing franchises, and with EA now owning the company, the list of racing IPs available to the publisher is even bigger (including Need for Speed; Burnout; F1; GRID; DIRT and Project CARS) – perhaps necessitating a culling of their less-than-successful franchises.

Still, for those who were fans of both the Project CARS and DIRT games this announcement is unfortunate indeed.
