Grounded Surpasses 13 million players

Grounded has had an interesting trajectory. Developed by Obsidian Entertainment, the game first launched in Early Access as a fun yet content-light survival title with a unique aesthetic. After two years in Early Access, the game saw its full release in September 2022 – with the title now surpassing 13 million players.

In an interview conducted as part of the Friends Per Second Podcast, Head of Xbox Studios Matt Booty discussed the potential held within smaller studios and teams. One example listed was Obsidian Entertainment, While not a small studio in their own right, the team which worked on Grounded certainly was – consisting of roughly 20 developers.

According to Matt Booty however, in the wake of the game’s 1.0 release in late September 2022, Grounded has now amassed an audience of over 13 million platters. Of course, it is worth noting that the game was available day-one on Xbox Game Pass, meaning that not all 13 million players will have bought the game. Even so, the success of Grounded is commendable, and with the game fully out now, this figure is likely to continue to grow over time as the team continues to add new content and update the game further.
