Nvidia’s RTX Remix tool enables modders to create their own ‘remasters’ with ease

Today's Nvidia stream didn't just deliver the announcements for RTX 4090 and RTX 4080. We also saw a number of other announcements for Nvidia Omniverse, a software stack featuring AI and ray-tracing tools that can be used to generate new content. Nvidia used these tools to create the newly announced Portal RTX, and soon, Omniverse will be home to RTX Remix, a new tool that will pave the way for more RTX remasters in the future.

RTX Remix is a tool that lets modders implement RTX support in older games. While demoing the tool on stage, Nvidia used The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind as an example, showing how RTX Remix can help make touch-ups to various parts of the scene, including higher resolution textures and additional lighting.

Whether or not modders will be able to produce something as impressive as Quake II RTX or Portal RTX remains to be seen, but at the very least, this will lead to nice, free visual improvements for many classic games. After Portal RTX, we imagine this tool will be used to touch up Half-Life 2, and many other games.
