PS5 Pro offers bigger GPU, but it’ll cost you £700

Just as promised, in a stream this afternoon, headed by PlayStation architect Mark Cerny, the PS5 Pro was officially announced. The stream was remarkably short, with just a quick 5-minute explanation on the upgraded hardware, followed by a mashup trailer of the first games set to offer enhanced graphics and performance modes on PS5 Pro.

The PS5 Pro offers up to 45% faster rendering, thanks to its larger GPU. As previously rumoured, Sony has not upgraded the CPU part of the SoC, so all the benefits here are coming directly from the GPU side, with its extra cores and RT Units. According to Cerny, aside from the faster rendering times, ray-tracing can be between 2X and 3X more performant and to help keep frame rates up, the PSSR upscaler is now being implemented, which is Sony's own version of FSR, utilising AI to fill in missing pixel detail for better presentation on high-resolution displays, while also boosting performance.

Some of the first games to be updated for PS5 Pro will include:

  • Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth
  • Horizon Forbidden West
  • The Last of Us Part 2
  • Demon Souls
  • Ratchet and Clank
  • Spider-Man 2
  • Ghost of Tsushima
  • God of War: Ragnarok
  • Grant Turismo 7
  • Hogwarts Legacy
  • Star Wars Jedi: Survivor
  • Forspoken
  • Alan Wake 2

Now here comes the part that stings – the PS5 Pro will be launching with a £700 price tag. Okay I'm exaggerating, it is actually £699, but still, that is a very significant leap over the price of the base PS5. Adding on to that, the PS5 Pro does not include a disc drive by default, so if you want access to physical media, you'll have to shell out extra for Sony's disc-drive add-on. It also doesn't include a vertical stand, so you'll have to pay extra for that as well. On the plus side, you do get a bump up to a 2TB SSD to install more games.

The PS5 Pro will be available starting on the 7th of November.

KitGuru Says: At that price tag, I can't see this selling nearly as well as the PS4 Pro did.
