Discord is adding YouTube ‘Watch Together’ and mini-games for server voice chats

Back in 2021, YouTube began taking down Discord bots that could bypass ads on YouTube while streaming content to groups in Discord servers. Shortly after that, Discord began working with YouTube to implement official integration, which is now finally rolling out.

Discord began testing official YouTube integration back in September 2021. Now, just over a year later, Discord is debuting ‘Activities', a new feature that will allow groups in Discord voice chats to do a number of things, from playing casual games (like in the MSN days), as well as a YouTube ‘watch together' function.

Once the update has been rolled out to everyone, you will see a new rocketship icon while in voice chat, and from there, free users can access two activities. You can launch Watch Together to share videos with everyone on the call, or you can start a game of Putt Party, a small and casual mini-golf game.

Those who subscribe to Discord Nitro will get access to a wider range of Activities. Only one person in a call needs to be subscribed and then these activities can be shared with other participants in the call. These expanded activities include additional games, including Checkers, Chess, Land-IO, Letter League, Blazing 8s and Poker Night.

As the Watch Together function is officially integrated to support YouTube, there will be ads involved, which will keep Google happy and stop them from discontinuing Discord functionality.

KitGuru Says: YouTube is free to use through Activities and fortunately isn't locked behind a Nitro membership. It would be nice to see a couple more basic games added for free as well. Will you be using Watch Together on Discord from now on? Or do you prefer a third-party website?
