For many years, video game cameras were implemented based on the technology available at the time, with 2D gaming eventually leading to static 3D gaming – with modern titles now offering full 360 degrees of camera control. In 2018, we saw God of War take a unique approach to its camera, being all positioned as a single take. Now, it has been revealed that the upcoming Dead Space remake will likewise be single-take.
The team at EA Motive recently released a blog post offering insight into the upcoming Dead Space remake. Alongside a plethora of other details, it was revealed that the game would operate with a single-take camera style, with senior producer Philippe Ducharme stating:
“From the moment you start the game to the moment you end the game, there are no camera cuts or load screens—unless you die. The Ishimura is now fully interconnected, so you can walk from Point A to Point Z, visit the entire ship, and revisit locations you've already completed to pick up things you might have missed—that's all new. It's now a completely unbroken experience.”
The original Dead Space maintained its immersion through in-world inventory menus and very little in the way of distractions from the game itself. Unfortunately, due to the limitations of 7th-gen hardware, the game did feature loading screens between levels. It will be highly interesting to see how making the experience seamless affects the game and its atmosphere.
