The original PlayStation VR felt in many ways like an experiment for Sony, with the console manufacturer dipping its toes into the VR market. Following the success of PSVR, Sony has announced a sequel headset is on its way, and according to reports, the manufacturer is planning to produce 2 million units ready for launch.
As reported by Bloomberg’s Takashi Mochizuki, mass production of the PSVR2 headset began last month in preparation for the headset’s launch sometime next year. Sony has yet to give us a concrete release date for PSVR2, though we do know that it will launch sometime next year.
According to Mochizuki, Sony is planning to manufacture 2 million headsets by March of next year – likely around the launch of the headset. For comparison's sake, the first generation PSVR headset performed well for Sony, though in actuality it only sold 6 million units during its lifetime and took a whole year to sell 2 million units.
Seeing Sony targeting such a figure as early as March 2023 is indicative not only of the current state of the VR market, but also Sony’s confidence and faith in its headset. Hopefully we get a proper release date and price soon.
