Unlike previous Call of Duty releases, the upcoming Modern Warfare II will be one of the first to see support for multiple years – with COD taking a break from mainline releases in 2023. That being said, fans of the franchise will not be starved for content, as the game’s second year will reportedly see the studio release a paid expansion featuring dozens of additional maps.
Call of Duty leaker ‘Ghost of Hope' recently took to Twitter claiming that Modern Warfare II will get paid DLC during its second year, saying “Interesting piece of info I heard from a trustworthy source recently… Infinity Ward are planning to release all/almost all Modern Warfare 2 (2009) maps together all at once sometime during the post launch of Modern Warfare II (2022). Very likely this could be Year 2 content.”
Ghost of Hope then followed it up with some additional details, claiming that “To celebrate 20 years of Call of Duty, a PAID ‘greatest hits map pack’ is in development. On top of MW2 (2009) maps, these would also include other classic maps from Infinity Ward, Treyarch & Sledgehammer's catalogue. Meant to be released for MWII Year 2.”
For the past few Call of Duty entries, all guns and maps have been offered for free to all players (presumably being subsidised by Battle Passes and other monetary means). That being said, we have never seen a post-launch content drop as large as what is being suggested, and so as long as the maps are well made, plentiful, and great value for money, this sounds like an excellent way to keep the MWII momentum going during its second year.
