Star Citizen has been purchased by over 1.5 million players

Star Citizen is one of the most interesting games currently in development due to not only its status as the most expensive game of all time, but also the fact that it has been in development since 2010. Despite the game being nowhere near completion, Star Citizen has amassed a small army of players interested in their elusive title, with almost 2 million players confirmed to have bought the game so far.

In the past, we have heard figures thrown about regarding the total number of registered accounts related to Star Citizen. While a good way to gauge interest in the game, we did not know just how many players actually purchased the game…until now.

CitizenCon 2952 recently went live with a report from founder and creative director for Star Citizen, Chris Roberts, where (as reported by Twinfinite) it was revealed that across the 4.1 million registered accounts, 1.7 million people have actually purchased Star Citizen.

1.7 million copies sold is impressive for a game which is nowhere near completion. That being said, considering the fact that Star Citizen has raised over half a Billion Dollars, the number seems somewhat conservative.

Those who have purchased the game in its current state seem to be enjoying it though, with Chris Roberts also revealing that in 2022, Star Citizen averaged a daily unique player count of over 50,000 people. Furthermore, those playing have also been doing so for longer sessions, with the average playtime in 2022 said to be 3 hours a day – compared to 48 minutes in 2017, 64 minutes in 2018, and 2 hours in 2019.

Star Citizen’s full release may yet be a pipe dream; however, it is encouraging at least to see that those who did put their money into Star Citizen are enjoying it.
