Fresh allegations emerge against Cyberpunk QA support company ‘Quantic Lab’

Back in June, sources revealed that a number of issues at games QA company, Quantic Lab, likely contributed to Cyberpunk 2077's rough launch. At the time, Quantic Lab denied all allegations made about its business and internal conduct, but additional sources have since come forward.

Quantic Lab is based in Romania and provides QA testing for many AAA game development companies and publishers. CD Projekt Red had hired the company and was assured that senior testers would be working on Cyberpunk 2077 to help get the game ready for launch. However, according to current and former employee sources speaking with PCGamer, Quantic Lab management would actively mislead clients when it came to QA team experience and the number of senior testers it had.

The report goes on to claim that Quantic Lab also has a high turnover rate and does not pay employees well enough to live close to its offices. Due to this high turnover rate, the company was often spread thin on projects, to the point where some teams were operating at less than 50% capacity. In many cases ‘lead testers' only had a couple of years of experience in the industry.

CD Projekt Red has not commented publicly on the situation with Quantic Lab, but it is noted that the company had the option to extend its contract to have the QA company help with post-launch updates and DLCs for Cyberpunk 2077. For reasons not disclosed, the contract was not extended or renewed.

Quantic Lab was eventually acquired by Embracer Group in late 2020, one of the largest gaming conglomerates in Europe.

KitGuru Says: It would be irresponsible to pin all the blame for Cyberpunk 2077's launch on one third-party contractor. CD Projekt Red used several third-party companies to aid in testing, in addition to its in-house teams. Still, if these reports are accurate, it is hard to ignore the fact that Quantic Lab's business tactics may have had an important impact in the final year of development.
